Ruptured Supply Line Floods Home While Homeowners are on Vacation

Water Restoration

When you leave home for a week, ideally, you would not be worrying about your home’s condition. Whatever reason you have for traveling, you deserve to live in the moment and not the anxieties of property damage. Unfortunately, when a water supply line ruptures, convenience is not considered. Recently, this disaster happened to a home in Congers while the owner was away, and PuroClean Emergency Restoration Specialists were called in to mitigate the property.

Fixing the Ferocious Flood

The clients were a married couple who were out of town for the week, on vacation with their kids. Although the homeowners were away, the disaster was discovered by the landscapers, who noticed water “raining” from the ceiling inside the house. They called the police and fire department, who had to physically break into the house to shut off the water and electricity. Afterward, it was determined that the flood was caused when the toilet supply line that refills the tank had broken and was running for days.

We needed to start the restoration as swiftly as possible because of the summer heat and the water having stood for days, which meant there was a very high chance of mold growth. The first step was determining which items in the house were salvageable and which were not. As it turns out, the majority of the items affect were beyond salvaging. The mattresses, sofas, and chairs all needed to be discarded, and the remaining items were packed out into a storage container and held until all repairs are made, which will take several months to complete.

The scope of the water damage to the property was so large that most rooms needed extensive restoration. This supply line that broke is on the upper level, which meant that the flood cascaded down each level, all the way into the finished basement. Furthermore, the ceiling collapsed in some areas, adding debris that needed to be cleaned up. All of the sheetrock, insulation, wood and tile floors, carpet, cabinets had to be removed.

This job is still in progress due to its sheer size. We have begun the drying process now that all the contents and materials that needed to be removed have been taken care of. The salvageable items that were packed out are currently being treated for mold contamination off-site. After we complete the drying process, we will reconstruct those areas.

Our hearts go out to these unfortunate homeowners but we are glad we can be of service to them during this very trying time. Of course, one of our main missions is to rescue their property. But, most importantly, we want to offer this family some peace of mind that it’s going to be ok eventually, and help them through this overwhelming situation.
