COVID-19 changed the way we all go about our daily lives, in one way or another. Some people were isolated from friends and family for long periods. Because of this isolation, occasionally, the quality of the environment some people lived in began to deteriorate. In some cases, it was to the point of becoming a health hazard. In early 2021, we helped two families clean up biohazard situations that resulted from COVID-19 isolation.
Performing a Duo of Hazardous Restorations
When living conditions contain unidentifiable contents, the work is considered biohazard cleanup. This is when the contents that are getting cleaned could potentially be dangerous. The technicians treat the affected areas as if contaminants, fluids, or other hazardous materials are present.
These situations require much empathy because the clients deserve the dignity of understanding. Each involved an older person that was seemingly self-sufficient, but they each developed unsanitary home situations in their days alone during the pandemic, unbeknownst to their relatives. After the families rescued them from isolation, our PuroClean teams discarded contaminated items safely and in a controlled fashion. We then performed detailed cleanings and thorough sanitizing to bring the apartments back to better than best condition.
One client was the brother of the resident, who reached out to us on his brother’s behalf, and the other client was the property manager of the resident. In both instances, we had established a pre-existing working relationship with the clients. They appreciated how we conducted ourselves–discreetly, professionally, and with great care and sensitivity to a delicate and potentially embarrassing situation in front of neighbors. The first client was located in Northeastern DC, while the other was in Crownsville, Maryland. Each job took less than three days to complete.
