Thus, projects with biohazards often mean dealing with blood, human or animal remains, chemical spills and more.

Biohazard Remediation Services Include

It is useful to remember that state officials are not obligated to clean up a crime scene. When police investigators are finished collecting evidence from the area, the responsibility of cleaning the property shifts to the property owner to employ biohazard remediation professionals. Professional cleanup teams can arrive onsite only when the police have gathered all evidence for the crime.

The Blood or Other Potentially Infectious Materials (BOPIM) Standard

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) issued a standard in 1991 to help guard all workers against possible dangers of blood or other potentially infectious materials (BOPIM). Hepatitis B virus, HIV, the 2019 Novel coronavirus (COVID-19), and many more are examples of Infectious pathogens.

BOPIM helps protect about 5.6 million employees in the healthcare industry and similar occupations, including biohazard remediation companies. Biohazard remediation services fall within the bounds of the BOPIM standard.

Also, the BOPIM standard consists of several requirements, including:

  • Conduct a Health and Safety Assessment (OSHA requirement)
  • Using work practice controls
  • Using appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Proper handling, transport, and disposal of hazardous medical waste materials
  • Specific required vaccinations
  • Mandatory training
  • Record keeping

Common Biohazard Situations

Each and every time biohazard workers handle potentially hazardous items, they are doing so at significant risk. Thus, following correct proper training and safety procedures are very important. This is important not only for their own personal safety but also for the person or persons who will reside in the property after the hazmat cleanup is complete.

Is Certification Needed to Perform Hazmat Cleanup?

Biohazard cleanup technicians are not obligated to obtain a special certificate to perform their work. They are subject to OSHA requirements, however, to don the proper PPE when working with or around bloodborne pathogens. We also suggest you follow the local city, state, and federal regulations for exact licensing obligations, laws, background checks, fingerprinting, or additional requirements to do biohazard remediation. For example, the state of Georgia voted in a new law that corresponds to any company providing restoration services for crime scene and trauma restoration.

PPE ensures the safety of employees and is the last line of defense. This equipment guards the skin, eyes, mouth, nose, and other areas against coming into contact with hazardous waste. The extent of PPE used on each project may vary on different job sites. However, PPE should always consist of full-face protection, cut-resistant, and nitrile gloves, properly assigned waterproof coveralls as well as a respirator.

Reputable and trustworthy remediation companies train their employees to work in the biohazard remediation field. This training includes implementing OSHA’s guidelines for handling hazardous waste. This training protects all involved: technicians, bystanders, and future tenants. Furthermore, the risk of accidents and potential lawsuits is limited greatly.

Our Biohazard Cleanup Process

  • The first step of the remediation crew is to inspect and flag all areas that need biohazard cleanup, perform a health and safety assessment, and identify the scope of the biohazard cleanup. When the technicians have a plan in place, restoration begins immediately.
  • All technicians will take precautions to ensure their safety and anyone close to the biohazard-affected areas.
  • The crew will then eradicate and dispose of all possibly infectious materials from your property.
  • OSHA regulations dictate exactly the way one should handle hazardous medical waste. For example, spinal fluid, peritoneal fluid, amniotic fluid, and any additional bodily fluids are carefully handled and relocated to a licensed hazardous medical waste incinerator.
  • Per state regulations and industry standards, technicians are obligated to dispose of porous materials like fabric and carpeting that you cannot sufficiently clean.
  • Non-porous items that are salvageable will be cleansed with hospital-grade disinfectants. If these items are unable to be restored, our technicians will cart them off and dispose of these items.
  • Following the cleaning process, technicians deodorize all affected areas and return these places to pre-contamination condition and appearance. One thing to do that proves areas are fully cleansed and ready again for habitation is to have a licensed industrial Hygienist perform clearance testing.
  • You can usually control odors by removing unsalvageable contaminated materials and cleaning items with hospital-grade cleaning products. However, difficult situations may call for further procedures of deodorization to accomplish success.

Cleaning and applying hospital-grade cleaners of frequently touched objects and surfaces are the much-needed actions to help prevent the spread of respiratory diseases, like coronavirus. Since any location can be re-contaminated after cleaning, and because the coronavirus is also spread person-to-person, we can’t guarantee PuroClean’s cleaning services to prevent the spread of coronavirus. Visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/index.html) for more information regarding coronavirus, its spread, and prevention.
