Don’t Get Burned: Essential Fire Safety Tips to Prevent Loss During Holiday Season

Fire Restoration

Local PuroClean Educates Residents and Businesses on Holiday Fire Safety; Technicians Available 24/7

Woodinville, WA (November 30, 2022) – According to the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA) 2021 Report, most fire-related injuries reported in the U.S. occur inside the home, and upward of 3,000 lives are lost due to fires originating in residential spaces each year. Moreover, Thanksgiving is the leading day for home cooking fires, with more than three times the daily average for such incidents. With the holiday season fast approaching, the property restoration experts at PuroClean are sharing tips homeowners can take to prevent the tragic loss that comes with fires accidentally starting at home.

Locally owned PuroClean of Redmond/Woodinville is on the ground in the Woodinville area, ready to help residents before and after a crisis. Below are tips recommended to assist residents in preventing potential damages associated with household flames:

  • Install Circuit Breakers: Circuit breakers are great tools to prevent electrical fires from faulty wiring or overload. Newer homes are likely to have them preinstalled but check with an electrician if you have any concerns.
  • Check Smoke Alarms and Carbon Monoxide Detectors: Ensure smoke alarms are operating properly by checking them once every six months. Set a recurring reminder in your phone to never forget.
  • Never Leave Cooking or Heating Appliances Unattended: Kitchen fires are the leading cause of fires reported in the home. Make sure to remain near the stove and/or oven whenever used. Similarly, space heaters should never be left on for extended periods of time.
  • Keep Grills and Smokers Away from the Home: Position the appliance at least 10 feet from the property siding and deck railings and out from underhanging branches that could catch fire.
  • Inspect and Clean Woodstove Pipes and Chimneys: Conduct regular maintenance on any wood-burning areas and check monthly for potential damages or obstructions.
  • Refuel Portable Generators Outdoors: Generators should never be used or refueled indoors, and homeowners should maintain proper ventilation when they’re in use.
  • Always Keep a Fire Extinguisher: Check the labeling to be sure that your extinguisher has been inspected and is up to code. The kitchen and garage are excellent places to keep extinguishers.
  • Develop a Fire Escape Plan: Worst-case scenario, it is important to prepare for the unexpected. Make sure you and your family know what to do and where to go in the event of a fire. Communication is key – possessions can be replaced but the lives of your loved ones cannot.

“Through our work in the remediation field, we respond to families experiencing the chaos of property damage and the lingering impact of fire and smoke,” Craig Hawkins, owner of PuroClean of Redmond/Woodinville, says. “In worst cases, memories and treasured possessions inside the home cannot be recovered. Our team works hard every day to assist our neighbors during their times of need, responding with the utmost compassion and empathy for those affected.”
