Berwick House Fire Aftermath: the Mess Doesn’t Soot You

Fire Restoration

Kitchen fires of all sizes are very common. It can be as simple as someone starts cooking and gets distracted by the doorbell or a phone call then they forget they have something on the stove. Furthermore, homes statistically suffer from kitchen fires the most frequently in November and December. Recently, a multi-level home in Berwick suffered from this exact situation.

What’s Cookin’?

We worked with the daughter of the property owner on behalf of her mother, who was generally confined to her in-home hospital bed. This house was absolutely bustling, as 4 generations of the family, including the owner’s grandson, and her great-granddaughter all live together.

In this incident, the fire started in the kitchen and left soot throughout the home. The lower level was being used as a hospice space, but fortunately, the soot did not get into that area. However, the main level and rooms on the second floor were greatly affected. Luckily, we were able to clean while the homeowners and her caretakers stayed there without the need for temporary housing.

In order to handle all of the smoke and soot, we used special equipment and deodorizing products formulated for smoke odor removal. Our objective is to improve indoor air quality as soot is a health hazard to the whole family, but especially for the homeowner under hospice care. We used our air filtration devices (AFD’s) with HEPA and charcoal filters to remove airborne particles and odors from the air to improve the indoor air quality.

Due to the size of the cleanup, we are still currently working on parts of the restoration. We hope to be done cleaning within 2 weeks but additional renovation work will take 2-3 weeks due to the installation of new custom cabinets. Contents throughout the house are still being salvaged and cleaned of the soot, which requires knowledge and expertise of the cleaning process to ensure it’s done correctly.
