Before a Storm:
- Make an emergency evacuation plan with your whole family. Include:
- A map of your home, escape route from each room, plan how all family members will get in touch with each other, establish a meeting place outside the home.
- Create an emergency preparedness kit that should include at least these items:
- A battery-powered flashlight, radio, spare batteries, water (for drinking and sanitation), nonperishable food, first aid kit, blankets, warm clothing, personal hygiene items
- Every household member should know how to turn off utilities, such as gas, water, and electricity.
- Family members should also know how to use a fire extinguisher.
- Get flood insurance ahead of time — some policies do not go into effect for 30 days.
- Make an inventory of home items, and protect important documents to help you file the insurance claim.
- Trim loose tree branches to reduce the possibility of branches falling on your property during a storm.
- Keep drains and gutters clean.
During a Storm:
- remain calm
- get inside immediately
- Close the doors and shut the windows
- Get in touch with all family members and ensure everyone is safe
- Bring pets inside, as well as things in your yard that can get damaged or carried by strong winds
- Avoid walking through moving water
- Do not drive on flooded roads
- Listen to local news to stay informed about the situation
- Do not use wired electric equipment. If the storm is severe, avoid using the utilities in the home (taking a bath, showering or using the plumbing).
After a Storm:
- Make sure everyone is okay.
- Check for damage to your home and beware of any hazards that could cause injuries.
- If you suspect damage to the electric, gas, water or sewer lines, call local authorities and wait for their approval to turn them back on.
- If your home was flooded, avoid direct contact with floodwater, as it is likely seriously contaminated.
- Make an inventory of the damaged or lost items and take photos of the damaged areas.
- Call your insurance agent.
- Call a restoration company, such as PuroClean, as soon as possible. They can determine the full extent of the damage and perform full restoration services in accordance with industry standards and best practices.
