Water Damage Restoration in Cranford, NJ (908) 577-9120

What to do when water damage occurs (in order):

1. Use caution

Try to stay calm and watch your step as floors may be wet leading to slips and falls. Keep a lookout for obstacles and any exposed wiring to avoid electrocution.

2. Shut off your water

If there is a pipe break in the toilet or sink supply line, find the shut off valve to the water supply line.  If you cannot turn off the water before the source of the leak, find your main water line and turn off the water to the entire home.  The main water shut off is usually located in your basement, along the wall facing the street.  Watch our YouTube video on how to find the water shut off here.

3. Call us (908) 577-9120

Do not hesitate to call PuroClean Restoration Services 24/7 line at (908) 577-9120.  If you haven’t had the chance to call your plumber yet, we will be happy to recommend some of our excellent trusted local plumbing partners. Additionally, call your insurance agent/company to determine if your situation is a covered loss and to file a claim. Let us handle the rest.

A head start- how to quickly minimize the extent of water damage:

You can take small steps to reduce the amount of damage to your property. After calling us at (908) 577-9120– if you are able to complete these DIY water damage restoration tips, things will run even more smoothly on our arrival.

Remove the water

If the affected area is small and uncarpeted, and you feel that you can clean it up yourself, a property owner can use a shop vac (remember to remove the filter) in order to extract water. You can also mop up as much water as possible. Running a fan near the wet area will help with evaporation, and if you have a dehumidifier, make sure that is operating.  If you do not have a dehumidifier and it is nice outside, open your windows for cross ventilation.

Wood furniture on carpeting

Place small plastic squares or aluminum foil under all wood furniture feet.  If left to sit in water, the finish on the furniture legs will stain the wet carpet.

Boxed contents

If you have contents in cardboard boxes that got wet, remove the contents and dispose of the wet cardboard boxes.  Separate items to dry near a fan or outside, weather permitting.  Clothing should be washed and dried immediately.

Damaged photographs

Save your precious memories- if you do not have time to separate and dry your photographs immediately, put them in a plastic bag and store them in the freezer until you have time to sort through and dry the pictures.  Putting them in the freezer stops the water damage from progressing.

Protect your valuables

Move any valuables (paintings, other art, antiques, jewelry, etc.) to a safe, dry place.

Frequently asked water damage questions:

“What does a water damage restoration company do?”

A water remediation company, like PuroClean, will come and access the damage, document the damage by taking pictures, and collect psychometric readings (moisture readings of the air), determine the source of the water, determine the scope of the loss (how far water has migrated) with the use of moisture meters, extract the water, tear out wet unsalvageable materials, remove and document unsalvageable contents (items that cannot be dried), and dry the structure by placing and running air movers and low grain refrigerant dehumidifiers. (908) 577-9120

“Does PuroClean work with my insurance provider?”

PuroClean Restoration Services works with all insurance companies.  We submit all paperwork including Xactimate or Symbility detailed estimates (third party companies that insurance and restoration companies use during a loss), moisture readings, inventory lists, pictures, and any information that is pertinent to the claim.

“Can my carpet or flooring be saved?”

The answer is yes and no.  It depends on what type of water loss you have and what type of flooring you have.  If you have a sewage loss, then it is recommended that you remove the affected areas, or at the very least, apply an antimicrobial agent to get rid of any unwanted microbial organisms from the sewage.  If you have carpeting that does not have a pad, then we can extract the water with our weighted extractor and dry the carpet in place.

If you have padding, it depends if the carpet pad has a moisture barrier on the padding.  If there is a moisture barrier, the padding has to be removed.  If we do not remove the moisture barrier padding, then PuroClean cannot dry the moisture and this will cause mold to form.  In certain situations, the carpet cannot be saved.  Wood flooring can be saved if it does not have a moisture barrier, is not laminate flooring, and has been properly dried right away.  Time is of the essence when dealing with water damage restoration and preventing further damage, like mold, from forming.

“Does homeowners insurance cover flooding or water damage restoration? Do you work with insurance companies to minimize the cost and hassle?”

Homeowners insurance provides coverage for damage that is sudden and accidental (such as water heater ruptures or pipe bursts). However, some flooding related to storms with rising water from rivers, streams, or area wide flooding in which water enters over a threshold of a building may NOT be covered by standard homeowners policies. Also, sump pumps may require additional coverage.  Consult with your insurance broker or carrier to determine your coverage and coverage needs for water damage restoration.

_____

My parent’s home in Monroe, NJ at Rossmoor was flooded in Hurricane Henry. When looking for a company to help with the water damage I came across PuroClean Restoration Services Cranford. I chose them because I had heard good things about their company and wanted to use someone I felt I could trust. Their team was great! Tim, who was the lead on the project was so kind and helpful, as were the technicians Dave and Tom. Tim did a great job letting us know what to expect and working with us to salvage anything we could. He was beyond supportive and was truly compassionate in a moment of devastation. They were also excellent at processing all of the documentation we needed for the insurance company. I would absolutely recommend PuroClean to anyone dealing with water damage, and would call them immediately if we ever experience another flood.
