Hellertown is a borough of about 1.3 square miles in Northampton County, part of the Lehigh Valley and just over the line from Bucks County. Johann Christoph Heller and his son Johann Simon Heller settled here in 1742, on land at the southern foot of Lehigh Mountain along the Saucon Creek. The town grew from a farming village into an industrial center after coal yards opened in 1848, the Lower Saucon Ironworks followed in 1849, and the North Pennsylvania Railroad arrived in 1856.

Some of that past still stands. The Heller-Wagner Grist Mill on West Walnut Street is home to the Hellertown Historical Society, and Lost River Caverns, a natural limestone cavern, sits in town. Main Street, which carries PA 412, is the busy commercial spine of the historic borough, lined with shops, restaurants, churches, and apartments.

That long history shapes the property damage calls we see today. Older stone and frame buildings sit close to creeks, and the Silver Creek is buried under Main Street and passes beneath several buildings. When heavy rain hits, water finds basements, lower floors, and parking lots quickly.

We’re PuroClean of Doylestown, owned by Christopher Cotignola, Christian Carpico, and Joe Samango, lifelong friends from the Philadelphia area. Our team is IICRC certified and EPA Lead-Safe Certified. Need restoration services Hellertown can count on tonight? Call Now for Fast Service at (267) 454-2200.

Road Connections to Hellertown From Our Plumstead Township Base

Our shop is in Plumstead Township, north of Doylestown along the Route 611 corridor in Bucks County. Hellertown is about 18 miles to the northwest in a straight line, by our own calculation from map coordinates. That means it sits across the county line in Northampton County, so it’s a longer trip than our closer Bucks County towns. Road distance is longer than the straight-line figure, and actual timing depends on traffic, weather, and the job.

Here’s how the main roads connect. PA 611 runs north through Plumstead Township and upper Bucks County. PA 412 runs north and south through Hellertown on Main Street, heading north to Bethlehem and south into Bucks County, where it provides access to PA 611. Just outside the borough limits, PA 412 has an interchange with Interstate 78, which heads west toward Allentown and east toward Easton.

Inside the borough, Main Street meets Polk Valley Road at the border with Lower Saucon Township, and Water Street crosses the Saucon Creek on the Water Street Bridge. West Walnut Street leads past the Heller-Wagner Grist Mill. Those low spots flood first in a hard rain, so we plan around standing water when storms are still passing.

Wherever you are in town, the restoration services Hellertown property owners need are a phone call away. Call Now for Fast Service at (267) 454-2200.

Flash Floods, Buried Creeks, and Winter: What Drives Hellertown Damage

Hellertown has flooded badly twice in recent years. In early August 2020, the remnants of Hurricane Isaias dumped nearly six inches of rain on the area and flooded parts of the 600 block of Main Street. Then on September 1, 2021, the remnants of Hurricane Ida brought an estimated five to seven inches of rain to the Saucon Valley, based on National Weather Service estimates reported by Saucon Source.

During Ida, the Saucon Creek rose fast under the Water Street Bridge. The Silver Creek overflowed and covered parking lots behind Main Street businesses in mud. Water was deep enough on Main Street to float a dumpster, and the intersection of Main and Water streets went under. At the Heller-Wagner Grist Mill, water entered the low-lying Tavern Room, and several businesses closed temporarily to clean up.

The cause is partly underground. The Silver Creek is buried beneath Main Street and passes under several buildings, so when it can’t carry a downpour, water rises in the street and pushes toward lower levels. The nearby Saucon Creek is also prone to flooding. Outdoor flood water is Category 3, so carpet pad, drywall, and other porous materials usually have to come out before drying starts.

Inside homes, trouble often starts below grade. Groundwater pushes through stone foundation walls, window wells fill, and floor drains back up. If the power goes out, the sump pump stops right when it’s needed.

Winter adds frozen pipes in exterior walls, which can leak behind finishes for days. Ice dams can push meltwater into attics and soak insulation before a ceiling stain shows. Furnaces running hard can cause puff-backs that coat rooms in oily soot.

Summer humidity slows drying, and damp materials can start growing mold within days if nobody measures moisture.

We follow IICRC practices: stop the source, extract the water, clean by Category, and dry to documented readings. For restoration services Hellertown can rely on after the next storm, Call Now for Fast Service at (267) 454-2200.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers for Hellertown homeowners, landlords, and business owners

Yes. Hellertown is on our official service-area list, even though it sits in Northampton County and our base is in Plumstead Township in Bucks County. It’s farther than many of our Bucks County towns, so we won’t promise an exact arrival time before we know the traffic, weather, and job size. When you call (267) 454-2200, we’ll ask for your address and what happened, then give you an honest plan. We handle water, fire, mold, and biohazard calls around the clock.

First, stay safe and keep people out of standing water, especially if outlets or equipment are underwater. Shut off power only if you can reach the panel without wading. Take photos and video before you move anything. Water from an overflowing creek is Category 3, so we treat it as contaminated. We extract the water and mud, remove porous materials that can’t be saved, clean and sanitize surfaces, and dry the structure to documented readings. We also prepare moisture logs for your insurer.

That depends on how much water came in, what it touched, and what your health inspector requires. Creek and street flood water is Category 3, so food-contact surfaces, prep areas, and coolers need careful cleaning and sanitizing, and porous items like cardboard stock and soaked drywall usually go. We extract the water and mud, remove damaged materials, sanitize, and dry the space to documented readings. Throw out any food the water reached. We’ll keep you updated so you can plan reopening.

Move away from a sagging ceiling, protect your belongings, and turn off lights or appliances near the water if it’s safe. Then tell your landlord immediately and take photos. The source could be a roof, a pipe, or a neighbor’s unit, and finding it fast matters in a building with several tenants. We can respond for the owner, track moisture through floors and walls, and dry each affected space. Renters should also call their own renters insurance about damaged belongings.

It can. When storms overload sewer lines, wastewater can push back up through floor drains, basement toilets, or laundry sinks. That’s Category 3 water, so keep kids and pets away and don’t try to mop it up without protection. Avoid running water or flushing until the problem is checked. Ask a plumber about a backwater valve to help prevent repeats. We remove the sewage, take out contaminated porous materials, clean and sanitize affected surfaces, and dry the area to documented readings.
