Sewage backup is a serious health risk. Blocked sewer lines can lead to sewage leaks—thick, dark water filled with harmful bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens. Exposure puts people and pets at risk for illness, making fast, professional cleanup essential.

If you have a backup in your home or business, don’t wait. Prompt repairs help prevent contamination from spreading into living or working spaces.

Why Sewage Backups Occur

Understanding what causes sewer line issues can help you avoid future damage. To support you, we’ve put together a helpful list of common causes—and how to prevent or respond to a sewage backup

  • Drain Pipe Clogs – Sewage can back up into your home or business when either your drain lines or the main sewer line gets clogged. For example, if one commode creates a sewage blockage, the drain tied to that toilet, or the mainline of more toilets, will likely also be obstructed.
  • Tree Roots – Large tree roots may grow into pipes, causing them to crack or shift over time. Even if the trees aren’t on your property, roots from nearby yards can reach your sewer line and lead to blockages or backups. To help prevent costly damage, keep an eye on where trees are planted—especially near your main sewer line or septic system connection.
  • Aging Sewer Lines – Aging sewage systems can deteriorate and crack, leading to sewage blockages and flooding in homes and basements. The older your area’s houses are, the greater the possibility of these types of incidents.
  • Heavy Rainfall – Heavy rain and flooding can overwhelm city sewer systems, putting your property at risk. When public storm drains can’t keep up, excess water may back up into connected sewer lines—leading to sewage overflow in homes or businesses.

Widespread flooding from hurricanes, rising rivers, or even sudden microbursts can mix stormwater with sewage, chemicals, and harmful bacteria. These contaminants pose serious health risks—especially when wading through floodwaters or after the water recedes.

Even dried sewage waste can become airborne, increasing the risk of inhalation. Always wear proper personal protective equipment (PPE) when cleaning up or entering affected areas to avoid exposure.
