5 Home Improvement Projects to Do This Winter

In The Community

The cold months of winter force us to spend most of our time indoors. While this may limit the activities you can participate in, here are several ideas for what you can do around your house before spring rolls around.

1. Spruce up your kitchen

Without turning this into a complete makeover, you can improve your kitchen’s looks and utility simply by changing the cabinets’ hardware. Repaint or sand and stain your cabinets if they look old and washed out. Upgrade your faucet and sink to give your kitchen an updated look. If you’re handy and feeling adventurous, you can even replace your old backsplash tiles.

2. Organize cluttered spaces

You may want to start with your basement, since that area is usually the most cluttered. Organize your stuff into different bins or boxes: things you want to keep, throw away, donate or sell. Try not to tackle the entire house at once, as you may get discouraged. Focus on one area or closet at a time.

3. Repaint a room

A fresh coat of paint is an inexpensive way to liven up your home. Unless you have zero experience, painting a wall is a do-it-yourself kind of job. Be sure to choose a color that will brighten up the room during those cold winter days!

4. Upgrade hardware

Replacing hardware is a great way to give your home a facelift without spending too much. Although you can replace old doors completely, sometimes it’s enough to purchase new doorknobs and hinges with more modern colors, such as aged bronze and brushed nickel.

5. Light it up

If you want to add a “wow” factor to a room this winter, a new light fixture, lamp or ceiling fan is the way to go. Consider energy efficiency: install LED-lights and ceiling fans that push heat back down.

Whether you want to add more functionality to your home or spice it up with some aesthetic changes, low-cost projects such as the ones above are easy to implement when it’s too cold to venture out. So give it a go and make the best of your time indoors!
