Dishwasher leaks can be caused by a number of reasons, such as overloading the dishwasher, using too much detergent or by a faulty gasket. Most of the time, you don’t need to hire a professional to repair your dishwasher. Below are the most common causes of dishwasher leaks and tips on how to fix them yourself:
- Make sure you’ve read the instructions manual and have been using the dishwasher accordingly.
- Don’t overload the dishwasher; place the dishes properly.
- Use the correct type and amount of dishwasher detergent (as specified in the manual).
- Make sure the dishwasher is leveled – all four legs should stand firmly on the floor.
- Inspect the gasket (the rubber strip on the door) for any damage, such as corrosion or cracks, and replace it if you’ve found damage.
- When replacing the gasket, turn off the power to the dishwasher first, then remove the old gasket. Soak the new gasket in warm water, which makes it easier to handle. Install the new gasket starting at the top of the door area.
- Check the spray arm, usually located at the bottom of the dishwasher. Remove the arm and look for cracks or warps, if the arm is made of plastic. Make sure that the holes in the arm aren’t blocked. To clear blocked holes, use a metal wire that has the same diameter as the holes.
- If water is dripping from the bottom of the dishwasher, check the lower box. Remove the lower front panel and check the drain hose (that connects the pump to the sink drain) for damage or loose connections. Also inspect the pump and, if the pump leaks, contact a professional to repair or replace it.
