CRANFORD, NJ – After Hurricane Sandy tore through New Jersey and New York, there were numerous homes in need of repair, with many suffering significant water damage. One company that assists with the cleanup of these situations is PuroClean of Cranford, which is known as “The Paramedics of Property Damage.”  PuroClean, restores fire and water damage, removes mold and also offers biohazard cleanup services.

Founded in 1990, PuroSystems, Inc. is a leader in the franchise restoration industry, having launched Puro Clean, which has become one of the fastest growing property damage remediation franchise organizations in North America.

After 13 years of owning a construction business and with the business slowing because of the recession at that time, Cranford residents Robin and Chris Hoy decided it was time for a change.

In 2010, she was speaking with a franchise broker and he told them about PuroClean. She said with their business background and her husband’s experience in construction, this was the perfect opportunity.

“I’ve always wanted to own my own business,” she said.

After doing research about the company, they quickly bought the Cranford franchise and went through extensive training in Florida. Today, Robin and Chris have five full-time employees and both Robin and Chris work full-time for the company, as well.  They attend training classes on a regular basis to keep abreast of the latest technology and innovation in the field.

Working during both Hurricanes Irene and Sandy, they received a total of 3,000 calls.  They helped as many people as possible but also had to witness people who lost their homes and all of their worldly possessions.

“It’s very emotional, especially this time with Sandy and last time with the flooding.  Everybody has a breaking point,” she said. “You don’t know what’s going to set them off.”

Losing the smallest thing like a plant or a picture can make a person cry, but Hoy said they must act professionally and not be overwhelmed by the situation. She said even after all of the training, it is still a difficult situation to handle on an emotional level.

“We thought we were ready and you can’t be ready,” she said.

She said working during a hurricane is exhausting.  However, looking back on their decision to change careers, she said she and her husband do not have any regrets.

“We just try to take care of everybody to the best of our ability,” she said.
