The Restoration Industry Association recently published “6 Tech Tips to Simplify Operations for Restoration Businesses,” an industry article authored by Nick Hindle, Chief Information Officer at PuroClean. Drawing from decades of experience in enterprise technology, software engineering, and restoration-specific platforms, Hindle shares practical insight into how restoration businesses can simplify operations, reduce friction, and scale more effectively through intentional technology decisions.

In the article, Hindle explains how thoughtful technology choices can remove complexity rather than add to it, an increasingly critical focus as restoration businesses grow and manage more jobs, data, and teams.

Technology That Supports the Work, Not the Other Way Around

Hindle emphasizes that technology should serve the operational reality of restoration teams, not slow them down. His six recommendations focus on simplifying workflows, improving data accuracy, and reducing manual processes that often create bottlenecks in the field.

Key themes include:

  • Choosing integrated systems instead of disconnected tools
  • Using real-time data to support faster decision-making
  • Reducing duplicate entries and manual work
  • Improving visibility across jobs, teams, and performance metrics
  • Ensuring technology scales with business growth rather than limiting it

Rather than focusing on trends for their own sake, Hindle stresses the importance of practical solutions that support day-to-day execution, especially in an industry where speed, coordination, and accuracy directly impact customer outcomes.

Why This Matters for Restoration Businesses and Their Customers

Restoration work happens under pressure. Property owners are often dealing with unexpected damage, tight timelines, and high stress. Behind the scenes, restoration teams must coordinate crews, documentation, compliance, and communication, often simultaneously.

Hindle’s insights underscore how well-designed technology systems help restoration businesses respond more effectively by:

  • Reducing delays caused by disorganized workflows
  • Improving accuracy in documentation and reporting
  • Enabling teams to focus more time on the work itself, instead of on administrative tasks
  • Supporting consistent service delivery across locations

When operations run more smoothly, customers benefit from faster response times, clearer communication, and more reliable outcomes during critical moments.

How Technology Leadership Supports Reliable Restoration

Nick Hindle’s contribution reflects PuroClean’s long-standing investment in operational excellence, security, and scalable technology. Before joining PuroClean as the brand’s first Chief Information Officer in 2023, Hindle played a key role in the original rollout of PuroMetrix (PMX) on the DASH Enterprise platform, helping shape how technology supports restoration operations across the brand.

Today, as PuroClean’s CIO, Hindle oversees PuroClean’s IT infrastructure, compliance, and security systems, ensuring that Franchise Owners and their teams are supported by technology that enhances performance rather than complicates it.

This feature reinforces PuroClean’s position as a brand led by experienced professionals who understand both the technical and operational realities of restoration. By prioritizing systems that simplify work and strengthen execution, PuroClean continues to support Franchise Owners in delivering reliable, high-quality service to homeowners and businesses nationwide.

Martha Stewart recently published an article outlining common attic fire hazards that homeowners often overlook, drawing attention to how small issues can quickly escalate into serious property damage. The article, “Attic Fire Hazards You Should Never Ignore,” highlights everyday risks that can turn attics into a dangerous environment if left unchecked.

Among the hazards discussed are electrical issues, improperly stored materials, poor ventilation, and aging insulation, all factors that can increase the likelihood of a fire starting above the living space of a home. Because attic fires often develop out of sight, they may spread significantly before homeowners are aware there is a problem.

Where PuroClean Expertise Comes In

Two of the article’s safety insights, focused on electrical risks and insulation-related fire hazards, include professional perspectives from Bud Summers, PuroClean’s Executive Vice President of Operations & Training. Summers emphasized how damaged wiring, overloaded circuits, or improperly installed insulation can create hidden ignition sources in attics, particularly in older homes or homes that have undergone renovations.

“Over time, the electrical components can be corroded and may cause a fire,” Summers commented.

He also noted that insulation problems are not only a fire risk but often a sign of deeper issues, such as moisture intrusion or previous damage. These conditions can compromise materials over time, increasing the chance of overheating or electrical failure.

Why This Matters for Homeowners

Attic fires are especially dangerous because they tend to spread rapidly and can compromise a home’s structure before smoke or flames are visible. By the time a fire is detected, damage may already be extensive.

The article reinforces the importance of awareness around:

  • Regular inspections of attic spaces
  • Addressing electrical issues promptly
  • Avoiding improper storage of flammable materials
  • Ensuring insulation and ventilation are installed and maintained correctly

For homeowners, awareness is the first step in prevention. Understanding these risks can help reduce the likelihood of a fire and limit damage if one occurs.

From Prevention to Recovery

At PuroClean, restoration work often begins after unexpected disasters, but many of those disasters can be prevented or minimized with early awareness and proper maintenance. Attic fires frequently result in complex damage involving fire, smoke, water from suppression efforts, and structural impact, all of which require specialized restoration.

Insights like those shared in the Martha Stewart article align with PuroClean’s commitment to helping property owners understand risks before they become emergencies. When prevention isn’t possible, PuroClean’s trained teams are prepared to respond quickly, helping homeowners recover safely and efficiently after fire-related damage.

By educating homeowners about hidden fire hazards, PuroClean supports safer homes and stronger communities before and after disaster strikes.

The International Business Awards are regarded as the world’s premier business awards program, open to organizations of every size and industry. The 2025 competition received more than 3,800 nominations from companies and individuals representing 78 nations and territories.

White’s career has long been grounded in service. From his time as a U.S. Army Captain to decades of leadership in franchising, he has been guided by the principles of integrity, accountability, and teamwork. Since joining PuroClean in 2013, White has rebuilt trust, united teams around a shared vision, and helped drive sustained growth. Under his leadership, the company has doubled its franchise locations and tripled average unit sales.

Reflecting on the recognition, White emphasized that the honor reflects more than his own leadership; it is about the values at the core of PuroClean:

A career that helped shape a brand. A legacy that will last.

After nearly four decades of dedicated service, we celebrate the retirement of a true icon in the PuroClean family: Chrissy VanderWyde, Vice President of Franchise Relations and the very first employee in the company’s history. She’s been at the heart of the brand from the very beginning, leaving behind an extraordinary legacy of leadership, innovation, and impact across every level of the organization.

“Chrissy was the historian, the heartbeat, and the foundation upon which so many have stood, learned, and thrived,” shared Margaret Chebat, Vice President of Account Management.

A Career That Grew With the Brand

Chrissy joined PuroClean in 1988 as a receptionist and quickly rose through the ranks, building a dynamic and multi-faceted career that touched nearly every department within the company. Her roles over the years included positions in customer service, accounting, human resources, and franchise support. She also spent two years working at a PuroClean franchise location, gaining a hands-on perspective from the local level side of the business. These experiences, combined with her unwavering commitment, helped shape the culture, systems, and people that define PuroClean today.

Leadership in Franchise Relations

In 2016, Chrissy became the Director of Franchise Relations and was later promoted to Vice President in 2019. In this role, she served as the liaison between the Home Office and PuroClean’s Franchise Owners, led new Franchise Owner onboarding, supported internal team development, and coordinated and participated in the annual Network Leadership Council meetings to offer Executive insights.

“Chrissy is someone who goes above and beyond, both within her own teams and outside of them, showing dedication and passion across the organization and industry. Whatever it takes to serve our Franchise Owners, to ensure great experiences, to make the right connections, and to have the services that they need, Chrissy does it, and she works with an enormous heart and kind spirit,” said PuroClean President & COO Steve White

Elevating Training and Support Through Innovation

Chrissy was instrumental in the conceptualization and development of the PuroClean Academy and its state-of-the-art Applied Structural Drying (ASD) Flood House, which was approved by the IICRC as the 17th such facility in the world. Today, it remains one of only 27 globally.

A Driving Force Behind Events and Company Culture

Chrissy’s leadership extended far beyond daily operations. She coordinated 25 of the 29 Annual PuroClean International Conventions, including the brand’s highest-attended, record-breaking events in 2021 and 2023. She also led the first-ever virtual Convention during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, uniting the network in new and creative ways.

In her multi-faceted role, Chrissy also oversaw the human resources and office management functions and was widely recognized for her open-door policy and deep care for the entire Home Office Support Team.

Recognized for a Lifetime of Excellence

Chrissy was honored with the Gold Stevie Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2021 and the Bronze Stevie for Woman of the Year in 2023. Her leadership and contributions were essential in shaping PuroClean’s systems, supporting its people, and guiding its growth. On her last official day as PuroClean’s Vice President of Franchise Relations, President & COO Steve White presented her with the “Legend Award” at a heartfelt farewell luncheon at the Home Office, a tribute to the lasting mark she has left on the organization and the people she served.

Chrissy VanderWyde was honored with the Gold Stevie Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2021 and the Bronze Stevie for Woman of the Year in 2023.

A Farewell With Gratitude

As Chrissy steps into retirement, we reflect on the depth of her impact and the legacy she leaves behind. Her leadership shaped the culture we hold dear, her wisdom guided countless decisions, and her presence brought calm, courage, and joy. As she moves on to this next chapter, she carries with her a legacy of strength and a community deeply grateful for the difference she made.

Bonnie Lanyon and Carol Ann Hunter share their heartfelt journey of business, family, and a friendship that spans decades, recently featured on The Franchise Woman Podcast.

PuroClean is proud to spotlight two of our longest-standing Franchise Owners, Bonnie Lanyon and Carol Ann Hunter, whose decades-long friendship was recently featured on The Franchise Woman podcast, with hosts Rebecca Monet and Tracy Kawa

In this moving episode, the two women reflect on their personal paths, the ups and downs of building businesses alongside their spouses, and how a simple pedicure and a zip line sparked a sisterhood that’s lasted more than 20 years.

A Business, a Legacy, a Lifelong Bond

Bonnie opened up about how she and her late husband, Tom, launched their Purofirst Fire and Water Restoration in Victorville, CA, during a financial low point, turning hardship into opportunity. After Tom’s passing, Bonnie carried on the business and eventually transitioned it to her children, continuing a proud family legacy rooted in service and perseverance.

“We started in a bedroom at the house,” Lanyon recalls. “Balancing the chaos of young kids and a brand-new franchise; that’s how we got into it. And now we’re 32 years in.”

Carol Ann shared a different, yet equally inspiring, journey. She and her husband, Rob, started their Purofirst Disaster Services – Louisville, KY, from their garage, growing it into the brand’s largest operation. Despite being polar opposite personalities, the couple turned their differences into strengths and their business into a powerhouse.

“We’d argue about what needed to be done,” Hunter said, laughing. “But over time, we figured out how to stay in our own lanes and respect each other’s strengths.”

How Franchising Sparked a Lifelong Friendship

The episode explores how Bonnie and Carol Ann met at a PuroClean event, bonded over a pedicure, and took their friendship to new heights, literally, on a zip line. What started as a lighthearted connection became a deep, enduring friendship built on shared values, mutual respect, and deep faith.

Their stories are honest, heartfelt, and full of laughter; touching on the real-life balance of business and family, friendship and faith.

Living the PuroClean Way

This episode is a powerful reminder that PuroClean isn’t just about restoration, it’s about relationships. Bonnie and Carol Ann’s story offers a candid look at what it’s like to:

  • Build a business with your spouse
  • Raise a family while running a franchise
  • Transition a company to the next generation

But more than that, it reflects the heart of the PuroClean brand: people who lead with purpose, serve with compassion, and support one another as ONE TEAM.

As Franchise Owners, they’ve built trusted businesses that serve their communities with care. As friends, they’ve supported each other through life’s biggest moments. And as leaders, they represent the integrity, resilience, and heart that define the PuroClean network.

From zero experience to a multi-million-dollar business, Becky’s PuroClean journey is reshaping what leadership looks like in the restoration industry.

PuroClean is proud to spotlight Franchise Owner Becky Edgren and her family’s inspiring journey, recently featured in Entrepreneur Magazine‘s article, “Her Franchise Is Worth Millions in a Male-Dominated Industry.” The piece shares how Becky, a former manufacturing CEO with no prior restoration experience, transformed her PuroClean franchise into a multi‑million‑dollar business, defying expectations in a traditionally male‑dominated industry.

From CEO to Franchise Owner

In 2007, Becky made a bold career change, leaving a leadership role in manufacturing to build something new and lasting. She wasn’t just changing careers; she was launching a family legacy.

With no background in restoration and no technical experience, Becky joined the PuroClean network and launched her first franchise, PuroClean Emergency Services in Moraine, OH. What she did bring to the table was a powerful mix of business acumen, leadership experience, and the belief that with the right support, she could learn anything.

“I had no baseline, no industry knowledge,” she shared in Entrepreneur. “Franchising gave me a foundation, and PuroClean gave me a roadmap.”

That roadmap, and her willingness to follow it, helped her build a thriving business that she now runs alongside her three daughters, Britni Hurst, Megann Eversole, and Lara Harshbarger. In 2010, driven by growing demand and her confidence in the PuroClean business model, Becky opened her second location in the same city. But Becky’s success isn’t just about growth; it’s about changing the perception of who belongs in restoration and who can lead.

Building More Than a Business

Becky’s story isn’t one of overnight success. The early years came with plenty of learning curves, but she approached every challenge with determination and humility. She leaned into PuroClean’s training resources, proven operational systems, and the support of fellow Franchise Owners.

Over time, she brought her three daughters into the business, growing a tight-knit, family-run operation grounded in values and a clear vision for growth. Today, her franchise is a standout, not just for results, but for the example it sets.

Becky Edgren & Daughters, Britni, Megann, and Lara

A Leader Lifting Women in Restoration

Becky’s influence extends beyond her market. As Chair of the PuroWomen’s Growth Group, she’s made it her mission to help more women in the PuroClean network gain the confidence and tools needed to succeed in restoration.

“Becky is the kind of leader who lifts others as she grows,” says Margaret Chebat, Vice President of Account Management at PuroClean. “Her work with the PuroWomen’s Growth Group is empowering more women to see themselves not only in this industry, but thriving in it.”

She knows the doubts and challenges that come with starting something new, and now, she’s making sure other women don’t have to face those barriers alone. That’s what leadership looks like at PuroClean.

Becky’s journey reflects the heart of the PuroClean brand, where grit, support, and a strong business model come together to create real results. Her story proves that you don’t need an industry background to succeed; you need commitment, vision, and a franchisor like PuroClean.

  • She’s empowering the next generation. Becky’s leadership is helping open doors for more women to step into restoration with confidence.
  • She’s showing the impact of franchising. With no technical experience, she built a top-performing business using the tools and training PuroClean provides.
  • She’s living the mission. From customer care to team culture, Becky embodies values of service, reliability, and compassion.

A Family Legacy with Impact

Nearly two decades in, Becky has built more than a business. She’s built a legacy. Together with her daughters, she’s reshaping what franchise ownership looks like. It’s about culture, family, and lifting others along the way.

To learn more about Becky’s inspiring journey, including how she’s grown a multi-million-dollar franchise while keeping family and work in harmony, read the full article in Entrepreneur Magazine.
