No one wants to confront a sewer backup in their home. The unmistakable smell alone leaves most homeowners reeling, but the resulting water damage can also carry significant hazards for your home and health. Sewage water carries harmful contaminants and pathogens, leading to category-three water loss.
Even worse, sewage water exposure can put your home in danger of mold growth as the moisture levels rise and building materials are affected. No matter the extent of a sewage backup, it’s an urgent property emergency that requires the skilled touch of professionals.
Sewer Backup Hurdles
We recently received a distressing call from a homeowner about a sewer backup in their home. When our IICRC-certified technicians arrived, we realized this would be no ordinary job. The sewage water had intruded into one of the home’s mechanical crawlspaces, flooding over three yards of gravel and dirt.
Upon further investigation, our team believed the source of the sewage leak came from nearby tree roots bursting a sewer lateral coming from the street sewage system. We also identified the unique challenges that stood in the way. Not only was the water damage a category three due to the dirty sewage water, but we also had the tight confines of the crawlspace and the removal of the contaminated gravel and dirt to contend with.

Our crew faced many obstacles during the work, including contaminated gravel and significant flooding.
Taking on the Challenge
Our team devised a careful plan for the job. The first step was to remove all the contaminated gravel and dirt within the crawlspace. We needed heavy machinery, which we brought in alongside shovels to clear everything out. Next, we extracted the sewage water from the crawlspace and removed all the contaminated drywall our advanced moisture meters identified.

We brought in heavy machinery (L) and worked away at the contaminated gravel with shovels (R).
We then returned moisture levels to normal using state-of-the-art air movers and dehumidifiers. During the drying process, we cleaned and sanitized the concrete to remove the black staining that the sewage water left behind. After everything was dried sufficiently, we sanitized all surfaces and applied an anti-microbial solution to prevent future mold growth.
Throughout the job, our team went the extra mile. We replaced all the contaminated gravel we removed with fresh, clean gravel. When we pulled away our heavy machinery, we realized it left tire marks on the grass. As a courtesy, we re-seeded the grass and laid down straw.

The crawlspace was restored diligently (L). We removed a massive amount of contaminated gravel and building materials (R).
Our crew’s professionalism, compassion, and top level of service earned us a five-star review from the client, who was highly impressed by our attention to detail and care for their home. We’re beyond ecstatic at the tremendous work our team completed against all odds. You’re the MVPs of property restoration, team!
