This weekend’s powerful nor’easter brought strong winds, heavy rain, high tides and significant coastal flooding to communities throughout the Jersey Shore. From Ocean City, Avalon and Stone Harbor to Wildwood and other South Jersey shore communities, flooded streets and rising water have left many homeowners and businesses dealing with water intrusion and the cleanup that follows.

In Ocean City, Saturday morning’s high tide reached 7.63 feet, nearly matching the level recorded during the historic January 2016 nor’easter. As the storm moves away and floodwaters recede, property owners are beginning to assess the damage and determine what needs to be done to get their homes and businesses dry again.

The Water May Be Gone — But the Moisture May Not Be

Standing water is only the most visible part of a water-loss problem. Water can travel beneath flooring, behind drywall, into insulation, under cabinets and into other building materials.

Simply removing visible water may not be enough.

When moisture remains trapped inside a structure, it can lead to:

That’s why getting water removed and beginning the drying process as quickly as possible is so important.

PuroClean of Vineland Is Ready to Help

PuroClean of Vineland is available to assist homeowners, rental property owners, property managers and businesses throughout South Jersey and the shore communities affected by the storm.

Our goal is not simply to remove the water you can see. We work to identify where moisture has traveled and properly dry affected areas to help prevent additional damage.

Have a Shore House? Don’t Wait Until Your Next Visit

If you own a second home, vacation property or rental property at the Jersey Shore, now is a good time to have the property checked — particularly if it is in an area that experienced significant tidal or street flooding.

Water can enter through garages, crawlspaces, lower levels, doors and other vulnerable areas without being immediately noticeable. A property can appear dry while moisture remains beneath flooring or inside walls and other materials.

If you’re not currently at the property, PuroClean of Vineland can help assess the situation and determine whether water removal or professional drying is needed.

What Should You Do If Water Entered Your Property?

First, do not enter an area if there may be an electrical or structural hazard. If it is safe to enter, document visible damage with photographs and contact a professional water mitigation company as soon as possible.

The sooner water is removed and professional drying begins, the better the opportunity to reduce secondary damage and prevent moisture from remaining trapped inside the structure.
